The start of a new year brings a renewed sense of energy and possibility in early learning. Even as our sector continues to navigate staffing pressures and regulatory change, there’s something hopeful about January. It brings a shared desire to begin well and to do our best for tamariki, whānau, and one another.
Sometimes, however, starting well is mistaken for moving fast. Full days, full planning, full expectations, all from the very first week. But, this year, we’ve taken a moment to consider whether that’s what our tamariki and whānau need most. What if the most supportive beginning is a gentler one?
For our kaiako, January is a time of anticipation. We look forward to welcoming whānau, refreshing our learning environments, and preparing for the year ahead. At the same time, we recognise that this period brings big transitions for many tamariki. Some settle quickly and confidently, while others need time, reassurance, and strong, consistent relationships to feel safe and secure. New whānau are also learning our rhythms and routines, and understanding the thinking behind what we do each day.
All of this takes time. And it deserves time.
This year, we have chosen to slow down as we begin 2026, allowing space for whanaungatanga to grow. Strong relationships are not built through pressure. They are nurtured through aroha, presence, and meaningful connection. While learning is always happening, the urgency to document everything immediately can wait. Our January focus is on relationships first.
By prioritising connection over documentation, we’re creating a foundation where tamariki feel welcomed, settled, and ready to learn. When we begin gently and together, learning unfolds naturally, with confidence and joy.
So, welcome back! Welcome to a year, where we begin gently, together.
We are so pleased to begin 2026 with your tamariki and your whānau.
